Lilo

Lilo's Story

Just after midnight on July 5, 2008, Lilo, a five-month old teacup blue Chihuahua, slipped out her pet sitter’s door. Within two hours she had been struck by a car and was on her way to an emergency vet clinic.

When owner Todd Katzenmeier rushed back to town, he received terrible news: Lilo had large open wounds on both forearms and a back leg. Her left paw was broken and degloved 360 degrees. The emergency veterinarian offered three alternatives: expensive orthopedic surgery, amputation of her left forearm or euthanasia.

With hopes for recovery slim, Mr. Katzenmeier decided to get a second opinion and took Lilo to Welborn Pet Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. She was examined by Dr. J.R. Swanson who removed the bandages and sent her home. The protocol prescribed included letting the wound be exposed to air instead of wet or dry bandages and giving twice daily iodine baths followed by Zn7™ Derm, a moistening wound gel treatment. After one week, the moisturizing gel was replaced by Collasate® applications. Rest and keeping the weight off the paws was strictly enforced.

Dr. Swanson graduated in 1983 but had helped in his father’s veterinary practice since he was 12 years old. “In 40 years, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to witness how the body can heal. In an emergency clinic setting, they don’t see that,” explained Dr. Swanson.

Within one week of beginning Collasate applications, just two weeks after the accident, noticeable healing could be observed. By the third week, Lilo was walking as much as she was allowed and regaining her puppy personality.

Five weeks after the accident, Lilo was almost completely healed with new skin and fur appearing on both front legs. The claw from her third digit and a small amount of granulation on her left pad was removed; this, along with loosening the skin under her right elbow, helped improve her mobility even more. The large open wounds healed without skin grafts or other expensive treatements.

“There were two factors in Lilo’s healing: her age and Collasate,” says Dr. Swanson. “It would be difficult to say how much each factor contributed, but the Collasate made a huge, huge impact.” Unlike other products, Dr. Swanson explained, Collasate stimulated granulation, but not too fast and not too slow. “In an injury with 360 degree degloving, the wound sometimes heals with thick scar tissue that might later strangle circulation causing the foot to require amputation anyway. There is no doubt that Lilo’s injuries would not have healed the same way without Collasate.”
